Walk a mile in my flip-flops

Have you ever taken the time to really get to know a leaf? Or talk to a plant about how its seeds move from place to place? The students from Beamer Elementary did just that on their field day at Lake Solano Regional Park, and more besides!

Conducted in both English and Spanish, the field day featured inquiry-based activities about plants and a nature hike. Students got the chance to see local wildlife up close and personal, and even got to observe the caterpillars of the pipevine swallowtail butterfly munching eagerly away on the curly pipevine plant!

Explore the Walk a mile in my flip-flops Unit

This unit was originally developed as seperate modules by a team of educators focused on bringing students to Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve and integrating this experience with other educational disciplines. Due to school district rules, the team could not bring students to Stebbins, but the Unit was easily adapted to Lake Solano Regional Park, a nearby natural area resembling the Reserve in many key ways.
