PUTAH CREEK INVESTIGATIONS

Why are these students trying to measure trees with only small rulers? They aren't ill equipped, they're learning new ways to learn about their surrounding using their senses, tools for investigation, and some basic science and math concepts.

This English Language Development class, in exploring Lake Solano Park, learned new techniques to enhance and quantify their observations of nature, with the added bonus of relating their experiences through activities designed to enhance their English skills.

This unit was originally develped as seperate modules by a team of educators focused on bringing students to Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve and integrating this experience with other educational disciplines. Due to school district rules, the team could not bring students to Stebbins, but the Unit was easily adapted to Lake Solano Regional Park, a nearby natural area resembling the Reserve in many key ways.
