Restoring Restoria

The students go on a field trip to the Putah Creek Riparian Reserve. On this trip, they have an opportunity to examine the effects of humans on the site for themselves. They visit two different areas: one site in need of restoration and another site that has been restored. They are given some time for personal observation and journal reflection. Each student uses his or her investigative skills to compare the two sites.

Groups of students engage in different restoration activities. Through this process students experience the challenges involved in restoration. At the end of the restoration activities, students meet under a cottonwood to share and reflect on their activities. A discussion takes place about different challenges such as herbivory, weeds, labor, and drought. Students comment on the difficulty and hard work involved in restoration work.
