| Water, Water Everywhere: Shaping Our World
It is early June as we approach Cold Creek. It first appears that it has completely surrendered to the hot, dry weather of late spring. The creek bed is dry and dusty, with only indirect evidence that water has flowed here recently. We gather data on the distribution and diversity of plants in the canyon as a result of that water, and then begin to move upstream. As
we climb further up the canyon, we come upon an area of incredible beauty
and peacefulness. There, between large boulders and protected by the
shade of trees whose branches span the creek, are pools of water. The
tranquility turns to excitement as we find that the pools are teeming
with life: abundant water striders and diving beetles, insect and amphibian
larvae. Nearby, we find butterflies and banana slugs. There seems to
be something interesting under every rock and around every bend. We
must leave much too soon, and it is hard to tear the students away,
but the big yellow bus awaits us!
