--- Unit Template Introduction ---

If you are interested in putting together a unit similar to those in Return of the Salmon, please read on!

The following are the steps and templates that our teacher and environmental educator teams used to build their integrated curriculum units.

Step One: Begin to fill out the Activity Planning worksheet and continue to add to it as you move through these steps.

Step Two: Come up with an overall theme: for example, "A fish-eye view of Putah Creek: Getting to know the stream."
Step Three: Define learning goals, and decide how a field trip would fit in to the objectives.

Step Four: Make a "map" of the unit, and figure out how to incorporate as many content areas as possible into the unit: language arts, math, etc., as well as science.  See individual units for ideas.

Step Five: Plan when topics will be covered in class, and when the field trip will happen.  The worksheet uses two weeks as a starting place, but many teachers altered this, taking more or less time depending on their needs.

Step Six: Find out what you need to know about the field site to see if it is appropriate.

At the end of your planning session, go back to your Activity Planning worksheet and Learning Objectives to make sure that you've encorporated all your goals into your lesson plans. When your students have completed the unit, assess if their results were what you intended them to learn and demonstrate in the first place as a measure of unit success.
